Knowing how to property write a check can make a huge difference in your credit score. Many checks are returned to the account holder because they are improperly written or illegible. While some high school students learn how to write a check in math or economics class, others don’t.

The first thing that should be written on the check is the date. The current date is sufficient for this line. Banks are not required hold post dated checks until the date on the date line, so wait until the money is in your account before you write the check. The next line to be filled in the payee line. On this line, you will write the name of the person or business you are sending the check to. Be sure this is legible. Next, write the numeric amount of the check. Use dollars and cents. The legibility of this line is very important.

After writing the amount of the check using numbers, you will write out the amount in words. If there is any question about the amount in the numeric field, the banker will compare it with the written amount line. These two lines should match. Sign the check on the signature line. An unsigned check is not valid.
